The anticancer activity of the Cichorium endivia root extract was examined on Hepatocellular Carcinoma cell line (HepG2). The gene expression for the cancer markers; P53, Bcl2, TNF and interleukin IL-2, IL-4 and IL-6 were examined using real time PCR. The expression of the P53 was high both in cells treated with 5FU (As anticancer drug) and root extract but the expression is lower in liver cancer cells. The expression level of IL-4, IL-6 decreased in the HepG2 cells treated with both root extract and 5 FU as well. In case of the IL-2 expression was high in cells treated with the root extract more than the others treated with 5 FU and control cells.
